As flash storage migrates into the enterprise data center, emergent companies like Nimble Storage have one key advantage over the legacy storage vendors – speed of execution. To maintain our technology lead, we’ve just greatly expanded our offices in Durham, North Carolina, close to Research Triangle Park (RTP). We now have a team of over 90 people here, spanning engineering, customer support, sales, product management, technical marketing, IT, and facilities.
We were honored to receive a number of important guests at the official opening of our new building on Wednesday, including Mayor William Bell, who cut the ceremonial red ribbon – except this time it was Nimble green.
We knew a year ago that our pace of expansion would require a move to a larger facility, and started a thorough search throughout the area. After looking at several options we selected the building at 1015 Swabia Court in Durham at the Imperial Center. We like the excellent location, landscaped courtyard, and the possibilities for growth – 87,000 square feet all in a single story building, which will enable us to support as many as 350 employees.
As a hyper-growth company in the competitive data storage industry, Nimble competes aggressively to attract and retain the best talent available. We’re proud of our employee-friendly HR policies, like promoting work-life balance, health care, extensive time off, and a first-rate leadership development program. Both our RTP and San Jose sites have been honored with Top Workplaces awards for the past two consecutive years, which is direct recognition from our employees.
Culture is a big part of this, because top-notch people want to work with other top-notch people. So we’ve designed these new offices to reflect the Nimble culture of openness, collaboration, and conversation. The central courtyard ensures there’s plenty of natural light throughout, and provides a great spot for people to chat, have a snack, or just recharge.
Our focus on talent means staying people-centric, even as we work intently on technology innovation. Adding Fibre Channel to our product line was among the most significant developments at Nimble over the past year, and the development of that functionality was led by the team here in RTP. We’re continuing to hire aggressively in this area, as we need many talented people to achieve our innovative product roadmap moving forward.
We like the proximity to the great universities in the area, both to spur our growth and for collaborating on research. We have Duke, NC State, and UNC within 20 minutes, and Virginia Tech, Clemson, and Georgia Tech within driving distance.
With all these factors going for it, the entire Nimble team looks forward to our continued growth in the Triangle area, as we design and build the next generation of enterprise data storage systems.
